Dallas Cowboys Draft Will Smith of Texas Tech
MAY 14, 2014, LUBBOCK, TX - After being ranked in the top 25 of all linebackers in this year's draft, Will Smith has been drafted to the Dallas Cowboys in the seventh round with the 238th pick overall.
Smith racked up numerous awards during his time at Texas Tech, including the 2013 Holiday Bowl Defensive Most Valuable Player and the ESPN Big 12 All-Bowl Team.
The Riverside, CA, native ended his collegiate career with an impressive final season including 120 total tackles, the most by a Red Raider since 2002; and 4.5 sacks. Eighty-six of those tackles were solo, a statistic that ranked him fourth in the NCAA and first in the Big 12.
'It's just so crazy, this is an incredible weight lifted off my shoulders,' said Smith about his NFL contract. 'The Cowboys have been my favorite team since I was young, so this makes it even more surreal. I can't wait to put on that blue and silver uniform and get to work.'
Smith follows in the steps of numerous NFL linebackers from Texas Tech, including Brandon Williams (2009 - 4th pick overall) and Michael Smith (2005 - 234th pick overall).
Derek Spearman, Smith's NFL agent, shared his excitement over his client's signing.
'Will was able to perform excellent during his bowl game,' said Spearman. 'Winning MVP of that game really opened up a lot of scouts' eyes to his abilities. It's no shock to me that the Cowboys drafted him.'
Look out for Smith on Sunday, September 7, when the Cowboys kick off the 2014 NFL season against the San Francisco 49ers in Dallas.
