Chargers' Rookie Poised to Run wth Opportunity in San Diego's Offense
September 26, 2014, San Diego, CA - With injuries piling up at the running back position the Chargers critically need a consistent and productive back to step up and open up the passing game for Phillip Rivers. Branden Oliver, the rookie out of the University of Buffalo looks to provide the much-needed spark.
Playing four years at the University of Buffalo, Oliver accumulated 4,704 total yards from scrimmage along with 35 total touchdowns. He averaged 5 yards per carry and 6.9 yards per reception in his senior year. In his first NFL preseason action Oliver had 64 yards on seven carries with a touchdown. Although he was limited to 11 total yards in his first NFL Regular Season game, the experience is something he'll remember forever.
'It felt great playing in my first NFL game, especially since it was in Buffalo,' said Oliver when asked about his return to Buffalo. 'Returning to Buffalo where God allowed me to perform the way I did during my college career was an amazing feeling.'
As Oliver successfully made the 53-man roster going into the regular season, he notes that not all that much changed in the transition.
'There really isn't that much of a difference between preseason and regular season honestly, the defense just plays a lot harder when the games matter. The coaches still coach the same way and still encourage you when things aren't going your way,' said Oliver. When asked what advice he was given from other players, he stated 'Just stay in the playbook, take heed to the coaches instructions, and do everything you can to stay consistent.'
While Oliver stays focused on doing whatever it takes to succeed in San Diego, he's also found there are a few perks to living in Southern California.
'The weather here is better! It's also been nice having a Krispy Kreme and Chick-fil-A on every corner.'
Fantasy Football fans take note, if Branden Oliver is still available in your pool pick him up!
